The meeting is intended as a kick-off event for a research project on bilingual lexicography with Amazonian languages, carried out in collaboration between scholars from the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and scholars from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del perú, with the following objectives:
- To provide a historiographical overview of the bilingual lexicography of indigenous American languages in combination with Spanish,
- to present the important and current (lexicographic) research projects dealing with indigenous American languages,
- to bridge the gap between current lexicographic theory and the reality of indigenous language communities in the Americas,
- to explore, in the context of digital humanities, the possibilities of seeking better use of resources with a view to more efficiently fulfilling the lexicographic functions envisioned; and
- to reflect on the need to develop an ethical perspective with respect to indigenous American languages that not only pursues linguistic goals but also takes into account the speaker and his or her environment in lexicographic practice.
