Second Meeting on Bilingual Lexicography

with Indigenous Languages

(Lima, October 14-15, 2024)

The Second Meeting on Bilingual Lexicography with Indigenous Languages will take place in Lima on October 14-15, 2024, and is organized by the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, venue of the event, and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany. This meeting maintains the objective of the First Conference, held in virtual format in August 2022, to allow the exchange of experiences and proposals of researchers dedicated to this field. The initial meeting proved a wide interest in lexicographic practice, both from a historiographical, and theoretical and empirical perspective.

As in the previous occasion, the Second Meeting will take place as its starting point the need to insist on theoretical and methodological reflection on linguistic documentation, metalexicography and digital humanities in lexicographic work with indigenous languages of the Americas. At the same time, they also propose to pay more attention to the challenges of linguistic work in indigenous communities to consider the knowledge of their speakers and their culture, which implies an ethical perspective. With this preamble, these are the points that the Meeting proposes to discuss:

• History and historiography of bilingual lexicography with indigenous languages.
• Use of bilingual dictionaries and glossaries in the philological and historical study of languages.
• Experiences and proposals for optimizing fieldwork in terms of documentation and lexical collection.
• Appropriate and necessary steps for the processing and analysis of lexical data.
• Theoretical and methodological considerations on the elaboration of bilingual dictionaries or glossaries in the field of metalexicography.
• Use and exploitation of new technologies in the specific field of indigenous languages, especially in the elaboration of corpora and lexicographic products.
• Bilingual lexicography for specific uses or purposes (e.g., intercultural interpretation and mediation, legal system, health services, etc.).
• Ethical perspective in lexicographic work with local cultures and knowledge.

Two plenary lectures in Spanish are planned, the first by Prof. Dr. Martina Schrader-Kniffki (Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany) and the second by Prof. Dr. Esther Hernández (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas de España).

Researchers interested in the subject are invited to send proposals, which should not exceed 600 words including bibliography, until May 5th, to the following two e-mail addresses huisaj@uni-mainz.de and jaime.penat@pucp.edu.pe with the subject [Jornadas de Lexicografía Bilingüe]. In addition to the contact e-mail address, personal data and academic affiliation should be included.

There is no registration fee for presenters or the audience. However, a dinner and some social activities in the city of Lima, none of which are mandatory, are planned and must be covered by each participant. These and other practical information will be published at a later date.
